Initial Response to Essay 1 Prompt (Informal)

Sullivan emphasizes the effects of deep reading, and how learning to love reading is essential in your college endeavors. On the other hand, Newstok emphasizes the positive effects of thinking “like Shakespeare”. Thinking like Shakespeare means learning to think critically, communicate clearly, collaborate, create, and be curious, as Newstok explains. When looking at the criteria that Sullivan presents for deep reading, there is overlap with Newstok’s criteria: “reflection, curiosity, humility, sustained attention, a commitment to reading, consideration of multiple possibilities” (Sullivan). Key words: a commitment to reading. For students to take charge of their reading means to gain these critical thinking skills, and thus, it means learning to think like Shakespeare.

Another point worth noting is that both authors mention “the joy of reading” being “reduced,” which indicates that the arguments work together. Both authors agree that learning is a long, dedicated process. Perhaps, learning to “think like Shakespeare” (Newstok), and learning to employ “deep reading” (Sullivan) skills, is essentially the same process.
